Eating their feelings!

Nickolas 2005

Tort 2005

Prior to our son being born our kitties were our babies. They were loved and adored like little princes. Since they were kittens they've been the center of everyone in this household's attention. We regulate their food to a half a cup each twice a day. I've taught them to sit up pretty, they "say please" before getting food, and both of our cats can "sing" the song from Lady and The Tramp... "We are Siamese If You Please MEOW..." they will sing every meow requested of them. Everything was fine until... "that baby" entered the house. (Excuse my hiiiigh whine-y voice. How embarassing.)

As of late every time they see either Loving Husband or myself move they bolt for the kitchen... for food - Nickolas is a pro at pawing at our food out of our hands (the audacity!) and their table manners (though always poor) are now appalling. Then they get started meowing, and then the baby fusses, and then the phone rings, then there's a dirty diaper.... and sadly the cats draw the short end of the attention stick and so in the interest of getting them to leave us alone we feed them. We've been neglectful kitty-mommas and daddys. It's true. I acknowledged that they're meowing for food because that's when they get the attention - so we try to pet them more. They are getting better (this is an extremely relative term) especially now that I've made the connection between neediness and food. But the truth remains: our kitties are eating their feelings.

Now they always bulk up a bit in winter simply because they don't go run around outside as much - it's cold here! So inside they stay sleeping on the back of the couch... and to be fair to these two - they are large cats to begin with. They have always weighed 13+ pounds since reaching adulthood. Tort is a maine coon - they're average is 16-17lbs. So we wouldn't ever have dainty cats. These are a man's man cat!

So allow me to introduce our kitties in all their glory (and my is there a lot of it!) For comparisons to their former selves I've posted "Pre Baby Weight*" pictures and "Post Baby Weight" pictures taken today. :) Those will be the only of their kind ever posted on this here website!

* To be fair it should be noted that the "pre baby weight" pictures were taken in the summer of 2006 and they were barely a year old. So they were still spry teenagers and not to their full adult bodied potential... but for comparison and dramatic sake :)

Oh my you lol your cats like we love our dogs! how fun,
thanks for stopping by my blog. If you ever are interested in a cricut, don't buy it on tv, email me and I will send you to a site where they offer great discounts and helpful hints. I had a friend who bought one off tv and paid three times retail for it. We love our cricut and the fun, quick, and easy things you can create. I love your blog!

HAPPY SITS DAY! The cats need a weight watchers meeting! I am a dog person myself, but I recently had a kitten-encounter that has softened my stance toward the feline species:

kitty weight watchers has a 4 step program lol. 1. lay on bed 2. go to sleep and 3. get up and eat 4. repeat. They seem to be following this nicely ;)

So cute! I can only imagine how our babies (the cat and dog) will react when we have a baby. I don't think it's going to be pretty!

Emotional eaters...I can relate to that! LOL!

AH, poor neglected kitties. Just kidding. Your son is way cuter, who can blame you. LOL

I used to have dreams about nursing kitties when I was pregnant with my little girl.

Our cats were our babies, too. They thought they had it rough when one kid entered the picture...then baby #2 arrived! Poor kitties.

At least you feed them. :-)

Beautiful cats, I have a Maine Coon as well. She's pushing 13 pounds and somehow ended up soaking wet on her legs and underbelly a few days ago. We think she was hanging out on the top stair of the pool. She's a strange one.

Chaotic Kristy said...

They look nice a health. I love cats and your look a lot like mine. I have had mine for about 7 years and luckily never had a problem when my daughter arrived. I wonder how he will be when my son gets her in Sept.

What funny kitties! Loved how "into" the baby they were!

The high pitched voice is part of being a new mommy. It takes a bit to master it.

And I love the pre-baby pictures. LOVE IT!

So sweet! I have been wanting to get a cat ever since I moved out of my parent's house and away from our family cat. But we can't have pets where we live. SAD!

Happy SITS day!

Awww... what sweet babies!! I don't know what my dog would do if I ever had a baby... probably have some sort of nervous breakdown. LOL

Gulp...eating their feelings hey..does this explain my sudden increase in baby weight or do you think that's umm...just 'cuz I'm a baby??

Seriously, does my bum look big in this diaper?

P.S. Happy SITS day!

Oh, how kitties suffer when babies come along. While our cat Sandman loved my daughter in utero, he used her as a cushion, he deeply despises the toddler she has become. Although now that she is starting to feed him, he seems to warm up to her. Just a tiny little bit...

Happy SITS Day!
